Downeast towns lure the curious value hunter
By Christina Tree, Globe Correspondent October 14, 2007
DAMARISCOTTA, Maine - Billed as "a Maine adventure," Renys is a chain of 14 discount stores scattered
along the coast from Wells to Ellsworth and inland from Bridgton to Pittsfield.
Like hermit crabs, Renys occupies spaces vacated by previous owners. The Farmington Renys fills a
former music hall; the Madison space was an opera house; and in Damariscotta Renys Underground was a
bowling alley.
In Bath, Gardiner, Dexter, and Damariscotta the shops fill the voids left by small-town clothing and
department stores. Listing what Renys stocks is harder than saying what it doesn't. There are linens,
shoes, name-brand clothing, toys, electronics, clamming and camping gear, stationery, and Maine-made
products. And there are always surprises, like an exotic line of vegetarian soups developed by the
Indian Ministry of Defense.
"Early on, my father realized that everyone was selling the same stuff, and the trick was to figure
out where they were getting it," says John Reny, the company's president, who has clearly inherited
his father's zeal for buying and selling. Since 1949, when the first store opened, Renys has become
less about odd lots picked up at bargain prices, and more about quality, service, and good value.
When you want big-time discounts, hit the Early Bird Sale on Nov. 3. All Renys will open at 6 a.m.,
and the biggest discounts happen in the first hour, with smaller but still substantial savings
every hour until 9 a.m.
