The Lego Group began in the carpentry workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, in Billund, Denmark in 1916 building homes and furniture. In 1932, Ole Kirk's shop started making wooden toys such as piggy banks, pull toys, cars and trucks and houses. In 1934 Ole Kirk changed the company name to Lego and began using it on their products. One of the first modular toys to be produced was a truck that could be taken apart and re-assembled in 1947 when plastics became available in Denmark. Lego's history spans almost 100 years of the existence of a toy that grew from small wooden playthings in the early 20th century into the center of a vast market of plastic building bricks that dominated the world markets for decades. It is one of the oldest plastic toys in the world.
Today’s Hasbro was founded in 1923 as Hassenfeld Brothers selling textile remnants and expanded to include pencil boxes & school supplies. In 1940 Hassenfeld Brothers produced doctor and nurse kits, its first toys, and modeling clay becoming a primarily toy company by 1942. Mr. Potato Head was born in 1952 and became the 1st ever toy to be advertised on TV. The 1960’s saw a company name change to Hasbro Industries. In 1984 Hasbro Industries purchased Milton Bradley & Playskool with the merger Hasbro Bradley became the world’s largest toy company. In 1985 Hasbro Bradley shorted its name to Hasbro Inc. Mattel Creations was founded in 1945 by Harold "Matt" Matson, Ruth and Elliot Handler. The company initially sold picture frames then dollhouse furniture. In 1947, the company has its first hit toy, "Uke-A-Doodle". In a first for marketing, Mattel became a year-round sponsor of Walt Disney Television program Mickey Mouse Club in 1955. The Barbie doll is introduced in 1959 by Mattel becoming the company's best selling toy ever. In 1960 Mattel introduced Chatty Cathy followed by the release of Hot Wheels to the market in 1968. In 1876 Andreas Brandstatter founded Geobra Brandstatter known today as Playmobil. In 1921 the company produced it’s first toys under the shorted company name of Geobra which included piggy banks, telephones & cash registers out of sheet metal. In 1952 plastic became the material of choice for the company’s toys. In the early 1970s, when company head Horst Brandstätter requested his chief developer Hans Beck to develop a new toy system, even he did not suspect the impact the new figures would have on children. In 1974, the company put the first sets of Knights, Native Americans, and Construction workers on show in its display rooms followed by Playmobil expandantion 1975 to be sold worldwide. Playmobil is all about role play, which addresses a basic need among children. They process their everyday experiences, wishes, joys and fears in new, constantly-changing stories. Imagination is the driving force behind numerous adventures – the children “write” their own scripts. Today, the Playmobil universe encompasses more than 30 different play worlds. In the anniversary year 2014, Playmobil is introducing a record number of 147 new products.
In 1864 Joseph Binney founds Peekskill Chemical Works for producing charcoal and lamp black. In 1885 thecompany change its’ name to Binney & Smith with its’ early products including red oxide pigment used in barn paint and carbon black used for car tires. In 1900 the company started producing slate school pencils. In 1902 Binney & Smith developed the Staonal Marking Crayon. In 1903 Noticing a need for safe, quality, affordable wax crayons, the first box of eight Crayola crayons was produced containing red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black sticks. 1949 brought the production of the 48ct box followed by the 64ct box in 1958. In 1977 the company acquires the rights to Silly Putty, the world’s most popular toy. 1987 saw the arrival of Washable markers, an instant hit with kids, teachers & moms, as well as production of Colored pencils.
In 1993 Binney & Smith celebrates the Crayola brand’s 90th birthday with the biggest crayon box ever – it holds 96 crayons, including 16 new colors. Crayola Color Wonder makes its debut in 2000 followed closely with Crayola Twistables, & Window FX markers. The 2000’s also introduced Crayola outdoors as Crayola redrew the boundaries of creativity. On January 1, 2007 Binney & Smith changes their name to Crayola LLC, reflecting the company’s No. 1 brand and its fast-forward innovative direction. The Crayola name has 99% recognition among U.S. households. Most recently in 2011, My First Crayola product line was launched, including triangular crayons, flat-tipped markers & more.
Melissa & Doug was founded by Melissa and Doug Bernstein in their basement in 1988. It is headquartered in Wilton, Connecticut. It is especially noted for wooden puzzles and similar types of high-end educational toys. All products are designed in-house in Westport, Connecticut by the sole designer, Melissa herself. Though the original product line (a line of videotapes) was manufactured in the United States, all subsequent products (toys) have been made in Asia.
