Renys opened in Belfast, Maine in 1987. This historic seaport town is the county seat of Waldo County, located at the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River estuary on Belfast Bay and Penobscot Bay.

Incorporated in 1773, the settlement was named after Belfast, Northern Ireland. On August 17, 1850, Belfast became the 8th city in Maine! Once a wealthy shipbuilding port with an active railyard, it still features beautiful old architecture including the 1818 First Church and 1857 Custom House. While shipbuilding began to decline, refrigeration brought a new industry to Belfast – catching and exporting seafood, like lobsters, scallops and herring. Over the years, industries like poultry farming, shoe manufacturing, and even banking have powered Belfast’s economy. In the last few decades, the working waterfront has been revitalized by two major shipbuilding firms.

Today, Belfast is a picturesque stop on your Maine adventure! The charming downtown, part of Main Street Maine, welcomes you to shop, dine and explore. Belfast is also the former home of Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes, pro baseball player George Edward “Live Oak” Taylor, and many prominent Mainers throughout the years.
