Renys Augusta

Augusta isn’t just Maine’s capital city and the seat of Kennebec County. It’s also home to the newest Renys department store!
Augusta is the easternmost state capital in the USA, built on banks of the Kennebec River. Originally home to the Algonquian-Wabanaki people, the area was called Cushnoc, meaning “head of the tide.” English explorers established a short-lived trading post in the early 1600s, but in the 1700s, as more explorers arrived and Fort Western was built, the city that became Augusta grew. In 1827, Augusta was designated as the capital of Maine. Along the river, industries flourished, with sawmills, textile mills, a paper and pulp plant, and more powering the city’s economy. The railroad arrived in 1851, and Augusta served as a rendezvous point for Union soldiers traveling to the front during the Civil War.
Today, Augusta is home to the State House, the Blaine House, the University of Maine at Augusta, the Maine National Guard, the Augusta Civic Center, and a charming historic downtown that’s been revitalized over the last decade or so. Augusta has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 28 years in a row, and is part of Main Street Maine and Main Street America. Don’t miss sites like Old Fort Western, Viles Arboretum, the Maine State Museum, the Kennebec River Rail Trail, and Capitol Park. There’s even an airport in town. While you’re in Augusta, don’t forget: Renys has everything you need for your Maine adventure, just a short walk or drive from Capitol Park!
