Ellsworth is the county seat of Hancock County – and home to Renys since 1992. Named after the US Founding Father Oliver Ellsworth, the town is popular for its historical interest and as a gateway to nearby Acadia National Park!

Like many Maine towns, Ellsworth has a history in shipbuilding and industry like sawmills, brickyards, pail factories, edge tool factories, a pottery maker and a tannery. During the Civil War, Ellsworth sent 653 of its registered voters as soldiers to fight for the Union! In 1907, work began on the Ellsworth hydro-electric dam, which led to the creation of Leonard’s Lake north of the city. Despite two major disasters during the 20th century – the great flood of 1923 and the great fire of 1933 – the city rebuilt and grew. Ellsworth has been home to numerous Maine senators, artists, and athletes.

Today, visit Ellsworth on your way to Acadia National Park, a stunning vacation destination, and stock up on essentials at the newly renovated Renys. Stay at one of many campgrounds, cottages or resorts in the area. While you’re in town, don’t miss the museums, shops, dining, and historic architecture featuring eye-catching Art Deco styles.
